CMS Education Session: String Stars: A Joyful Ending for a Class

Our activity will teach participants to make a string star. This string figure was originally made in Japan, but connects to the universal childhood pastime of playing with string. The activity of making a string star connects students’ lived experience of playing cat's cradle in childhood to their university education. In our teaching, we use this activity as a means to end a course and create a lasting memory of joy in the mathematics classroom.

CMESG Ad Hoc: String Figures: A Universal Mathematical Toy

String figures are a universal recreation. They're found everywhere from Greenland to Africa. In every culture, they are used to entertain, tell stories, and pass on traditional knowledge. Parker Glynn-Adey presented a brief ad hoc workshop on string figures. He showed participants how to make The Star, a traditional Japanese figure. The purpose of the workshop was to elicit feedback about the potential uses of string figures in mathematics education. The workshop provoked discussion and participants shared their experiences around string figures. Everyone had played with string as a child and was surprised to feel their "embodied knowledge" return as their fingers remembered. As people arrived late, the participants enthusiatically shared what they had learned. Everyone left with smiles on their faces and string in their pockets.

(Ethno-)mathématiques des jeux de ficelle inuit

Eric Vandendriessche et Parker Glynn-Adey La pratique des « jeux de ficelle » a pu être observée depuis la fin du 19e siècle dans nombre de sociétés autochtones de la planète, et dans les sociétés inuit en particulier (Jenness 1924, Patterson 1949, Mary-Rousselière 1969…). Elle consiste à appliquer à une boucle de fil une succession d’opérations effectuées avec les doigts (mais aussi parfois avec les dents ou les poignets), de manière à obtenir une figure. Dans cet atelier, nous proposerons une initiation à la pratique (inuit) des jeux de ficelle, afin d’en faire expérimenter les aspects algorithmiques, et de mieux rendre perceptibles les concepts mathématiques (opération, altération, transformation, itération, etc.) impliqués dans cette pratique. Enfin, nous verrons que l’élaboration d’outils de modélisation (empruntés à la théorie des groupes notamment) permettent, d’une part, de mieux saisir la nature des opérations à l’œuvre dans les procédures de jeu de ficelle, et, d’autre part, de faire des hypothèses sur la façon dont ces procédures ont été créées.
